Role Brand Identity / Packaging / Illustration
Nuwa is an Amazonian herbal tea from the native Awajún community. This brand belongs to “Las Nuwas”, a group of women from the Amazon who live in a forest of almost 9 hectares in the San Martín region of Perú. They work in an organized way to conserve and recover the power and knowledge of the plants in this area. This knowledge is inherited from mothers to daughters and from generation to generation. Nuwa means woman in Awajún and, in addition to raising children and cooking food, these women are in charge of curing family members who fall ill. With the Takiwasi Laboratory and Conservation International as interlocutors, the main challenge of the project was to make the Nuwas feel represented in the packaging of their product, as well as to achieve a good execution with a reduced budget.

We needed to be in constant contact and communication with The Nuwas to properly portray this exceptional community of women. It was essential to be willing to listen, understand, and collect all the information they gave us. We decided to represent their daily activity through an illustration. We use a fresh and tropical style that denotes the character of these impressive women and the climate where they live.

We used dark colors to represent the mysteries of the jungle and to generate a balance between spontaneity and ancestral knowledge. We add foil finishes to symbolize the valuable treasure that knowledge signifies. These ideas are reinforced with the graphic of a coin at the bottom of the packaging with the profile of a Nuwa. The packaging also responds to the needs of Takiwasi, an institution that develops bio-businesses from medicinal plants, a model that is inspired by the symbiotic nature that exists between ancestral and modern knowledge.

During the development of this project, we had the great fortune to meet a Nuwa in person. We naturally received a lesson in empathy during this process. There are many different cultures and visions of reality in our country that we must accept and respect.

With the help of the Takiwasi laboratory and the financial help of Conservation International, a total of 110 species of aromatic and medicinal species of plants have been identified. The huasca clove and ginger were chosen for the Nuwa infusions.

The Nuwas generate income to support their families with the Nuwa products as they continue their conservation efforts. Fibra decided to subsidize 50% of the cost of their packaging design.
